Here I provide you with 20 of my recent Amazon Prime favorites. These are binge watching quality people! I have provided the TV rating for you in case you are curious. Here they are, in no particular order:
Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (TV-MA)
Rotten Tomatoes Score of 96%
This show is a must watch! This is one of those shows that just sucks you in. The show was created by the creator of Gilmore Girls. The show is also said to draw inspiration from the life of Joan Rivers.
Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman (TV-PG)
I was happy to see this show up on Amazon Prime. I used to love watching a show about a female doctor in that era. I believe the show still holds the same charm that it did back when it first premiered.
The Americans (TV-MA)
Rotten Tomatoes Score of 96%
This is, hands down, my absolute favorite show in the world. The writers have done an excellent job creating a 1980’s storyline about Russian spies living in the United States as Americans. You get to see snippets of why and how they became Russian spies and what their work involves. As a proud American, I found myself torn when not wanting these characters to get caught by the FBI throughout the show.
Rotten Tomatoes Score of 83%
This is one of those Masterpiece shows with music that makes my husband’s eyes immediately glaze over. This show is a drama about the life of Queen Victoria. The costumes and scenery are visually stunning. And you get a history lesson to boot.
Indian Summers (TV-14)
This Masterpiece show is set in India and is a drama about the political strife during British rule. I find the show fascinating and learned a lot. There was also some drama thrown in there and beautiful scenery. It is a must watch and I am not doing it justice in this description.
Good Girls Revolt – Female journalists from the 1960’s (TV-MA)
A great show about female journalists demanding that they receive fair pay and equal treatment to their male counterparts. I know, it doesn’t sound interesting, but trust me! There was a similar storyline in Mad Men and you liked it, right? There, that settles it.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is a fun character. He hunts down (and is hunted) by criminals in his native Kentucky. I am not the biggest fan of shows with violence, but there is plenty of comedy thrown in there to make it tolerable. This show is based on books by Elmore Leonard.
Curb Your Enthusiasm (TV-14)
If you haven’t watched this yet, what are you waiting for? Larry David is the co-creator of ‘Seinfeld’ and has you laughing through the entire show. Like Seinfeld, the show isn’t really about anything in particular, but it has him dealing with everyday situations. I’m a little worried that I am Larry David. I agree with him when all of the other characters in the show think he is wrong. What does that say about me?
Sons of Anarchy (TV-MA)
This show is crazy violent the further you go into the seasons. So, why do I like it so much? My husband said he was sure I had a crush on the lead actor. I don’t know, but I was just intrigued by the life of people in a biker gang and the rules that they have to live by. It’s just an awesome show.
Zak Morris is Trash (TV-MA)
This is not really a show, but little 5-minute segments that dissect episodes of Saved By the Bell. During these snippets, a male voice details the many ways in which Zack Morris is trash. This is definitely not high-brow television, but it’s great if you watched Saved By the Bell as a kid and need a laugh.
I love the scenery and costumes in this show. I admit it’s a little cheesy, but fun. Did I mention it’s another Masterpiece show?
Z: The Beginning of Everything (TV-14)
Christina Ricci portrays Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald. You get a look at how they courted and what her husband was like.
Downton Abbey (TV-14)
A fabulous drama set in the early 20th century. You get a look at the workings of upper and working-class society in Britain at the time. As the show progresses, characters find themselves questioning the status quo in favor of more modern rules.
Sneaky Pete (TV-MA)
You’ve got a convict assuming another convict’s identity when he gets out of prison. He manages to infiltrate a family because they haven’t seen their kin since childhood. Drama doesn’t get much better than that!
Eastbound and Down (TV-MA)
Silly humor about a professional baseball player. I’m trying to think of another show to compare it to, but it is just unique. This show is hilarious.
If you like shows set in the Wild West, you’ll like this show. The main actor is Timothy Olyphant, same lead as in Justified.
The Sopranos (TV-MA)
This show is about a mob boss in New Jersey and the pressure of him being in that role. I just couldn’t stop watching one episode after the next. I think I found this show interesting for the same reason that I liked Sons of Anarchy. You get an inside look into the inner-workings of a gang.
These are shows that I have watched with my kids and found enjoyable and tolerable to watch. Although my kids had no trouble watching these shows, only you know your own children and what they will be comfortable watching. With that said, here is a small list that I have put together for you:
Just Add Magic (TV-Y)
My kids love this show! It has drama, mystery, and creativity wrapped all into one. A group of girls literally cook up spells with food in order to save the day. A fun show for all ages to watch.
The Kicks (TV-G)
Another kids’ drama show that an adult won’t mind watching. This show is based on the series of books of the same name. The books were written by female Olympic gold medalist and U.S. Women’s National Team soccer player Alex Morgan. The storyline is well written and has an authentic feel.
Hole in the Wall (TV-PG)
This is a game show where teams compete to…fit through hole cutouts in a wall. It is very entertaining for all ages. Trust me!
That’s all folks! I hope that you will enjoy watching one or more of my suggested shows.
