Ballet BC will be performing it’s first U.S. tour of Romeo+Juliet at the gorgeous Soraya in Northridge! This is a re-imagined version of Romeo+Juliet that is said to have a modern take that resonates with today’s audiences. Take the family to watch this re-telling of the timeless tale of Romeo+Juliet this February 29th and March 1st, 2020 at The Soraya. Read on for more details about the show.
A SoCal Way of Life received tickets to attend the event, and to provide in a giveaway, in exchange for my written review and sharing on social media. However, all opinions expressed here are honest and my own.
Expose the kids to some Shakespeare!
I am a little embarrassed to admit that I have never exposed the kids to Shakespeare. It’s true, there are Shakespeare in the Park events and other such opportunities. But realistically? I don’t think that my kids will understand what is going on or get much out of it.
Enter Ballet BC’s first U.S. Tour of its Romeo+Juliet production!
My girls are big fans of dance. That alone is sure to keep hold their attention. However, add to that the fact that the Ballet BC’s version of Romeo+Juliet is a modern take on the classic Romeo and Juliet story? Priceless! I am excited to take my entire family to see this re-imagined version of the story.
When my kids start studying Shakespeare in school, I hope that they will be able to draw upon their experience watching the Ballet BC’s interpretation of Romeo and Juliet to help them analyze the story and have a better overall understanding of Shakespeare’s works.
What can I expect at the show?
A press release from The Soraya about the Ballet BC’s Romeo+Juliet states, “The new full-length work delves into a thought-provoking retelling of the classic that resonates today, capturing audiences with its deeply human story and enduring themes of love and family.”
While the Ballet BC’s Romeo+Juliet still tells the classic story of forbidden love, it does so with a modern twist that incorporates the beautiful art of ballet. This ballet will be set to the 1938 score by composer Sergei Prokofiev.
Tell me more about the Ballet BC?
Ballet BC is a collaborative and creation-based ballet company that was founded in 1986. This company is internationally acclaimed and is known in Canada as a leader in contemporary dance.
The Soraya’s press release also states that, “Ballet BC’s dancers are a group of open-minded and curious artists, each unique for their dynamic movement while sharing an intuitive passion for dance. Ballet BC is committed to its role as a leader in the community through dancer training opportunities, community and audience outreach, and professional development activities.”
Why The Soraya?
The Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts is a beautiful facility located on the California State University, Northridge (CSUN) campus.
The building itself is gorgeous and impressive to behold. The 1700 seat theater is grand, yet intimate enough to feel like you are able to get a great view regardless of the location of your seat.
I also love that the theater is located on the CSUN campus. You can walk around with the kids so that they can see what a local university campus looks like, and then take them for a nice lunch or dinner nearby after the show.
This will be my family’s third show at The Soraya and I can personally tell you that my kids are still in awe of the The Soraya’s grandeur and beautiful floor to ceiling windows 😉
